Not that far away really and it will be here before you know it. Please ask questions! More so in your classes, but you may do so here if you want. It is very important that you are familiar with your grading syllabus and it's on the back of your grading card so no excuses. If you have any doubts and concerns ask your instructors for help, that’s what they're there for. Also for those that want some one-on-one training, you can book some private tuition with Sensei or myself. If you are able to afford it, it's money well spent as you get the full attention of the instructor. Remember that you can also have group bookings so you can share the costs.

Again if in doubt, please ask!

Oss

Thank you for letting me start again in my kata yesterday. I totally blanked out. I guess it was the heat as I felt totally exhausted when I left and slept most of the afternoon and evening. I was prepared to fail but decided not to give up. Looking forward to the next lesson in my new belt and working towards the next one.

Congrats to everyone that passed their grading and got the next belt! Also may I take the time to say to all those that didn't, there is no shame in failing a grading. This is part of your journey through Karate and will determine your character. Just because you didn't get through this time, doesn't mean you will never get through. Now you know exactly what to expect and when you do pass, you will be a much richer Karateka because of it.

For all those that did pass, especially the higher grades, remember to come back down to earth! lol. I expect to see you all training hard next week, not giving yourself a break! In all seriousness, many of you have reached a landmark, you are now brown belts and that carries with it much responsibility within the club. Lower grades will be looking to you for example and you must lead by example. Your training will now be harder as will expectations of you and I'm sure you all will not disappoint. Everything should now come together in your training; you are beginning to master the basics, now it must begin to flow. You must start to visualize when performing your Kata and make it feel and look real, oh, and now you have to start getting those hips to work! lol.

Again, congratulations to you all. Good job!

Oss!

I have one more training session before I have a week off. After Saturday I won't be seeing any of you until the day of the grading!!!

Anyway, I just want to wish everyone good training in the week to come. Remember to ask Sensei lots of questions and advice while you still can! My own opinion and observation is that the standard is high amongst the students once again, so keep up the good work!!

All the best for the coming week and very good luck on the day!

Oss!

(Forgive me for this one but it's the first time I have filled in one of these forms) On the form where it says Belt Size/Colour Request do you put a circle around the numbers (which I guess are belt/suit sizes) or do you write your suit size in with the belt colour? If not suit size how do you know what belt size to go for?

You did promise that you would either write it down for me in a form that i know how to pronounce those tricky words or record it for me. Any chance you could do this for me. I have looked on youtube but it has not been of any help......

I just would really like to be able to do this.

Thanks......

Ok, But after last weeks lesson I just felt really flustrated. I have been researching Taikyoku Shodan on the internet and can just about remember the order of the first half of the move. Still yet to remember weather to turn left or right when forming the top part of the I. Have ordered the book Beginners Guide to Shotokan Karate by John Van Weenen as suggested by Terry. Bit difficult to practice at home as not enough free floor space to do the moves in.

Stop worrying! You have enough classes left to get the hang of it. No one can tell you in writing how to achieve what you are struggling with, actually you haven't clearly explained just what part of the kata you are struggling with. Approach the instructors in class, they will help you, thats what they're there for. Remember, everyone struggled with kata when they first learned it. Also remember that it takes a lifetime to perfect any given kata, thats why we all train no matter what grade we have achieved. Karate is hard, but it should be enjoyed, the more you enjoy it, the easier it will become.

We haven't practiced this move in class recently. Can anyone help with the direction of each move. I think I am ok with the moves it's just the direction I can't remember. I want to practice this move at home but really can't remember how to do it. HELP!!!!

That said, you should never be shy, we are all very approachable and are only too happy to help you. Always feel free to ask me any questions and if I can help I will, I know for a fact Sensei will too.

So, ask away!

OSS

Well said! I cannot really add to that. Although many students say they haven`t done certain techniques, kata or kumite in the lesson, they should think. Did they miss any lessons in between gradings, as TSKR lesson plans and structure for the months in between gradings will go ahead and cannot always cater for your absence. Alternatively book private lessons with myself....

Hello all,

Not a question, just me trying to pass on a few tips for those about to undertake their grading on Saturday 7th March 2009.

Sometimes attendance in the dojo is not enough.

What I mean by this is that training can also be done at home with minimum space.

Before I took my Nidan grading, I spent at least 30mins a night practicing the kumite sets on the spot in my living room. I would select two sets, for example Kihon ippon kumite set 1 and 2. I would go through these on both sides for 20 to 30 mins, to try and get them ingrained into my mind, so I'd be ready on the day to perform all when asked. Two sets every evening.

I also found it possible to perform basic combinations at least twice through in my living room, but if that isn't possible, then one technique will suffice. Remember the better you are at individual techniques, the better you will be able to combine several.

Kata was a bit more difficult, but then you can do those on the spot to a degree.

Remember though that the most important training to be done at home is learning the Japanese and also learning about dojo etiquette.

I know some of you will be saying, "It's alright for him to say that, I don't have the time!" Well in case some of you don't already know, I run my own business, If I can find the time I'm sure you can find a little. Remember you get nothing for free and success takes hard work and dedication. There are no shortcuts.

OSS!
