Parents Questions Answered
•What are Merit Badges & why do we need them in children’s karate classes?
Merit Badges are short term incentives for children. As we all know children cannot see long term goals and need immediate rewards and appraisal for there efforts. Each badge that is awarded will be awarded when a child has achieved a good standard of technique or discipline. Children can show off there efforts by wearing their badge on there suit (gi).
• How do TSKR put them to use?
Each week your child will be shown new techniques, as a group activity. When your child has learnt the technique, they can tell the Instructor or Club secretary that they wish to test for a new badge from the list at the level.
Over the weeks your child will be able to attain 11 badges (First Belt) When all badges have been achieved they will be tested again and asked what each badge means and asked to demonstrate them.
After this and they pass, your child will be able to wear the colour belt for that level. They will also be receiving a certificate. The Certificate will be recognised nationally as an official holder of that belt.
So when they move up to the next class they continue to wear the same belt and will not start at the bottom again.
•How much is this going to cost?
A normal grading fee for TSKR will cost £15 with additional cost of £2.50 for the belt.
The badge system costs
£15 all inc, except the training fee
• Are there any other expenses?

This means that when your child achieves their first belt after gaining the required amount of badges they will be entitled wear that belt and it will be officially recognized by receiving an authorized certificate from TSKR Chief Instructor.
